Gabriel Yared is a well known and versatile composer, with film scores that range from the French classic Betty Blue to the Oscar winning The English Patient.

Gabriel Yared was born in Beruit and lived there for the first 18 years of his life.  From a very early age he became interested in music and began to learn alongside his studies.  Although he later on benefited from a more academic education by the great masters, he remains at heart a self-taught musician, always on the trail of a musical ideal.

As well as achieving success in the film world Yared since 1985 has composed music for dance, working with ballet directors Roland Petit and Carolyn Carlson.

He is also the founder and director of the Pléiade Academy, which welcomes and supports talented young composers in the production and promotion of their works. 

He now lives in Paris, France.

Gabriel Yared has composed the score to The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency with late director Anthony Minghella. Based on the popular novel by Alexander McCall Smith, this was their fifth film together after The English Patient (which won Yared an Oscar), The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cold Mountain and last year’s Breaking and Entering. This new film is a drama comedy about a woman in Botswana who starts up the country’s first female-owned detective agency. Mirage Enterprises, Film Afrika Worldwide and The Weinstein Company produced this release, which recently aired on BBC1.
