RICHARD BLACKFORD

Richard Blackford was born in London in 1954. After studying at the Royal College of Music he went to Italy for a number of years to work as assistant to the composer Hans Werner Henze.

After studying composition and conducting at the Royal College of Music, Richard worked in Italy as assistant to composer Hans Werner Henze. He returned to the UK in 1977 to set up the music theatre department of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and has been a guest lecturer at the Royal College and Royal Academy of Music.

His music has been performed and broadcast all over the world and has been featured in the Adelaide, Cork, Montepulciano and Berlin Festivals. It has been recorded on Sony Classical, Decca, Argo, Warner Classics, EMI, Quartz and Signum Classics. He is the recipient of several awards including first prize at the Houston Film Festival, the Royal Television Society Award, the Mendelssohn Scholarship and the Tagore Gold Medal.
